Representatives of Canada and the Netherlands in their joint statement indicate that "paying attention to the jus cogens (imperative norm, - ed.) nature of the prohibition of genocide and the erga omnes partes (mandatory obligations, - ed.) nature of obligations under the Genocide Convention, all Contracting Parties have a common interest in achieving the lofty goals of the Genocide Convention.
In view of our common interest in achieving the high goals of the Convention, as well as our continued interest in it, Canada and Netherlands decided to intervene in this case in order to present their interpretation of the relevant provisions of the Convention before the court, says the website of the International Court of Justice of the United Nations.
