Charlemagne - one of the central figures of the Middle Ages. He managed to unite Western and Central Europe under his rule and obtain the title of "Emperor of the Roman Empire." Karl spent most of his life in campaigns of aggression. He maintained relations with both Byzantine and Arab rulers. But despite all efforts, the empire fell apart during the reign of his grandchildren.
